The safety helmet for a kid is a must-have. Is your baby wearing it? Print

Taiwan has the highest density of scooters in Asia. Many parents are also accustomed to shuttle their kids with the scooter. But, always remember to make your child wear a helmet! According to the statistics of the National Police Agency, scooter accidents are the major cause of death and injury among traffic accidents concerning children. Each year, more than 6,000 children under the age of 14 are injured or deceased on average. In fact, more than 30% of children do not wear safety helmets while riding a vehicle, but so far, our country hasn’t promulgated special specifications on "helmets for children." And the number of qualified safety helmets for children in the market also remains unknown.

Mrs. Huang (as the parent of her deceased kid): "We were ready to go home, and then I never went home again. I was madly screaming when I saw my kid run over by a car. He only stopped when he heard something."

A car accident happened 3 years ago to take the life of her son.
Mrs. Huang (as the parent of her deceased kid): "I almost reached him, if I had a few more seconds. I watched his head smashed. Like what people often said, I didn’t feel anything until I personally experienced it. Out of economic considerations, I had to use the scooter to shuttle my kid. If I had taken precautions, such as preparing a helmet for my kid, I would have been able to avoid those dangers."

Every time I think of it, I feel heartache, because my son was only about 9 months old. If I had done more preparations at that time, I would have mitigated the injuries suffered by my kid. Taiwan has the highest density of scooters in Asia. Many families are used to riding bicycles for shuttling their kids. In reality, many kids on the scooters do not wear safety helmets.

The CEO of Jing Chuan Child Safety Foundation, Yueh-Chin Lin: "Parents often said that they could not drive a car owing to economic considerations. But here, we have to remind parents that maybe they can use the public transport as much as possible before their kids reach the age of 6, as parents do in advanced countries. Also, the dress is another consideration too. Many parents would make their kids wear the relatively slippery wind coat or down trousers in the back seat. So, when their parents make a turn, their kids are thrown out."

In fact, motor vehicle traffic accidents are the first major cause of injury and death among kids and teenagers. Analysis of accidental injuries from 2014 to 2016 indicated that more than 30% of children under the age of 12 do not wear safety helmets when riding a vehicle. And a majority of kids (up to 90%) do not wear the safety helmet when riding a bike. So, in the event of an accident, the children's heads often bear the brunt.

The CEO of Jing Chuan Child Safety Foundation, Yueh-Chin Lin: "Be sure to wear a safety helmet, but of course, in our helmet, the smallest head circumference is 51 cm, so we can see that there is no protection for children under the age of 5 if they wear the helmet. And so, we must also emphasize that parents should do their best to avoid shuttling their children on the scooter."

Reporter Pei-Ju Huang: "Vehicle traffic accidents have been frequently reported. In fact, according to the statistics of the National Police Agency, scooter accidents are the major cause of death and injury in children's traffic accidents. Each year, more than 6,000 children under the age of 14 are killed or injured. So now, many parents know they should prepare the safety helmets for their kids. However, we should not only buy a helmet, but also make adjustment according to the kid's head shape."

The manager of a helmet store, Kai-Wei Lien: "When we are helping children find the most suitable helmet, you can easily find that it may be loose and not safe at all. This often occurs among kids at or above the age of 5. For kids under the age of 5, the helmet can often become useless or uncomfortable to wear as their ears may be folded under the helmet. Discomfort is most severe issue. So, we must make adjustment until the kid can comfortably wear the helmet. The sponges are usually attached on the front, back, left and right sides. However, as some people may have longer heads, we may have to make adjustment for the forehead and back of the kid’s head, depending on the kid’s head shape."

The helmet needs to be adjusted for both adults and kids. However, as domestic safety helmets only have a specification on the minimum head circumference of 50 cm, and there is not a specification on the smaller circumference for smaller kids, exactly what is the percentage of qualified commercial products? Relevant units are also unable to grasp the figures. But, parents should also pay attention to the correct method of wearing the helmet after purchase.

The manager of a helmet store, Kai-Wei Lien: "Look up. See? It is not loose now. The helmet is very closely attached upon his forehead. His eyebrows are in line with the lower edge of the helmet. When the windshield is turned upwards, the windshield area will become bigger, and the helmet won’t be pulled backwards like a kite."

The life of a child is precious and it can't stand any risk of accident. Adults must wear the helmet to protect themselves, and never forget to prepare helmets for their children.
