Traffic safety knowledge |
A.Understanding prohibitory signs.
Car drivers and pedestrians must strictly comply with notices about compliance, bans, restrictions and other special regulations on the roads. Prohibitory signs are divided into the following three types:
Showing compliance
Showing bans
Showing limit
Prohibitory signs' shapes and colors are:
- Shape: round, octagonal, inverted equilateral triangles, squares and crosses used exclusively at railway crossings.
- Color: Aside from special traffic signs which have other rules, compliance signs have a white design on a blue background, ban and control signs have a black design on a white background with red border. Regulatory signs have to be truly followed to avoid receiving a fine!
B. Understanding directional traffic signs
Directional traffic signs are used to indicate to road, direction, Kilometerage, place name and public facilities, etc, allowing motorists and pedestrians easy identification.
Directional traffic signs shapes are: plum flower shaped, square, arrowhead or shield shaped.
The numbering principle of public road system is:
- Roads running south-north: From west to east each successive road is one odd number higher, starting from the road's northernmost point.
- Roads running east-west: From north to south each successive road is one even number higher, starting from the road's westernmost point.
- Subsidiary roads paired with one of the roads above or extensions should have an end connected to a main road, and should take the main road's assigned number with an attached Heavenly Stems or number.
The rules for marking number of public roads are as follows:
- National roads are arranged from 1 upwards.
- Provincial roads are arranged from 1 to 99.
- County roads are arranged from 101 to 200; in areas outside the island they are arranged from 201 upwards.
- For rural roads each county becomes an independent area, with each county starting its roads from number one. Furthermore a county marker precedes each road number.
C.Understanding warning signs
In order to raise drivers' and pedestrians' awareness of unusual circumstances and prepare them to take contingency measures, before the following road conditions you can see warning signs:
- Sharp turn
- Dangerous slope
- Intersections
- Road work
- Near railway crossings
- Temporarily dangerous road conditions
- Other unusual road circumstances
Warning signs shapes and colors are:
- Shape: equilateral triangle
- Color: black design on a white background with red border. But the "Signal Ahead" sign's pattern is red, yellow green and black.
D. Understanding assistance signs
Aside from warning, ban and directional signs, other signs and signals are set up to allow road users identification or promote road safety. They are:
- Lane advanced warning notices are used if there is a change in lane configuration ahead.
- Safety directional guidance signs are used to urge drivers to drive slowly and give guidance on which direction to drive safely.
- Reversible lane directional signals are used to show drivers: where indication controls are, where it is forbidden to cross and where it is forbidden to perform u-turns.
- Supplementary signs are used to assist main signs when it is impossible to express the purpose of installation (such as for limited periods or kinds of vehicle) or to clarify or for educational purposes.
- Vehicle trouble sign is used when there is a vehicle's breakdown on the road ahead. They urge drivers to pay attention, slow down and yield to oncoming vehicles. Drivers may set up this sign voluntarily.
- Work zone signs are used when the road ahead is under construction. Vehicles should slow down or change lanes. The signs, set up near road construction, are diamond-shaped or rectangular with black writing on an orange background with black or white designs and a thin black border.
A. vehicle traffic signals
- Round green light
- Under circumstances where there are no other signals, control lines or directions, a round green light shows that a vehicle is permitted to directly go straight, turn left or right.
- In places without exclusive pedestrian signals, a green light allows pedestrians to directly cross the street.
- Arrowed green lights
- Arrowed green lights show that vehicles may only proceed in the direction indicated by the arrow.
- In places without exclusive pedestrian signals, a forward pointing arrowed green light allows pedestrians to directly cross the street.
- Round yellow light
- A round yellow light is used to warn drivers and pedestrians. It shows that the traffic light will soon be red and at that time pedestrians and drivers lose the right of way.
- Round red light
- A round red light indicates that vehicles must not proceed. They must not cross the stopping line or enter the intersection.
- Vehicles facing a round red light and an arrowed green light simultaneously may proceed in the direction indicated by the green light.
- In places without exclusive pedestrian signals, pedestrians facing a red light, no matter whether there are arrowed green lights or not, are forbidden to cross.
B. Exclusive pedestrian signals

When the "green walking man" is lit continuously, it shows that pedestrians should quickly cross the street.
When the"green walking man" is flashing, it shows a warning to pedestrians that there is little time remaining to cross the street. If a pedestrian is already crossing, they should quickly get to the other side or central traffic island. If they haven't yet started crossing, they are forbidden to cross.
When the "red standing man" is continuously lit, pedestrians are forbidden from crossing the street.
When the"red standing man" is flashing, it shows that the crossing is working with another connected traffic control signal. Before crossing, pedestrians should stop, look left and right for oncoming vehicles and then carefully cross. |
Road traffic lines
Traffic lines are used to control traffic, namely controls, prohibitions and directions, using lines, figures, characters or other guidance markings on the road surface or other facilities.
