A word from the minister
交通部部長-毛治國

The number of motor vehicles in Taiwan has grown quickly. In 1992 there were 11,260,000 vehicles; come the end of 2010 and the number had increased to more than 21,690,000, an increase of almost 10 million. However, according to Department of Health statistics, the number of deaths from traffic incidents has already decreased in recent years. From 1992 to 2009, the number of deaths in traffic accidents per 10,000 vehicles has dropped from 5.61 to 1.06; the total number of traffic fatalities has dropped from 7,216 to 3,464, the lowest in recent years. This is saving thousands of families from being destroyed.

This is completely dependant on our road safety system and government resources from central to local joining hands and working together to push highly difficult reform measures.  These include determining core concepts of road safety, making sure we solve “motorcycle” and “drunk driving” problems, integrating central and local road safety systems.  Through supervision, assistance and emulation we give assistance and positive, creative, effective actions.

Although the rate of traffic fatalities is dropping year after year, there are still three to four thousand deaths due to traffic accidents.  Moreover, with the evolution of technology, road safety problems are becoming more complex by the day.  We hope we can make a success of using web technology far and wide to promote strength, and effectively promote road safety knowledge and new road safety policies.  It is for this reason that our ministry opened “The 168 Road Safety Traffic Portal” website on 7/12/2004, establishing the number one exclusive traffic safety website in the country, expecting that it can become a road safety information communication platform between government and the people.  On the website, aside from being able to download free posters, videos, foldable books and other connected published materials, also has statistics and research materials for the public to view.  The most special part of the website is an exclusive section for schoolteachers, students and parents, we warmly welcome people to download information widely and spread the knowledge to their friends and family.

In addition, starting from 2008, we have use YouTube, blogs and other web platforms to disseminate even more traffic safety.  We welcome web-users to connect to our web site to provide us with even more criticism and guidance, allowing our website to come closer to perfection.

For every traffic accident we reduce, we are not only saving a person’s precious life, but also protecting the both victim’s and perpetrator’s families from harm.  Therefore, in our work maintaining safety, the ministry takes responsibility and hopes to provide multiple ways to disseminate traffic safety consciousness and concern.  Let’s make our traffic safer and smoother!
